International Mother Language Day

Aaron and I decided to combine business with pleasure yesterday afternoon.  The kids had finished all of their school by lunch time, so we left them watching Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty to finish off their Fine Arts studies for the week, and Aaron and I drove into town for a lunch date before we went to support our colleagues involved in International Mother Language Day.  Yes, technically the day was February 21, but we celebrated on "Solomon Time".

Traffic continues to grow worse and worse as the potholes grow throughout the rainy season.  I snapped this picture while we were sitting in what should have been two lanes of traffic.  I just missed a picture of that truck on the left driving on the sidewalk.  It took us forty-five minutes to travel just a few kilometers.  At one point, we were in the left lane going one direction, the middle lane was traffic coming toward us, and a third lane was created on the far right by vehicles driving the same direction as we were going.  I'm glad Aaron was driving!

After lunch, we drove over to cheer on our colleagues as they presented.  We didn't get to stay nearly as long as we liked, but this year's theme of local languages and science fascinated me.

Our colleagues had set up a table with completed New Testaments alongside John 3:16 printed in many languages.

Next month, we hope to attend the Kwaio New Testament dedication.

Our creative colleagues also had name tags to stick on when you came in the door.  Instead of your name, the sticker boasted your language.  "Langguis blong mi..." is Solomon Island Pijin for "My language is..."  So, Aaron and I wore tags that said "Lavukaleve".
